About Mokutmfon Ntah:
Tell us about your artistic background and experience. What led you to pursue art as a creative outlet?:
I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember, and it has always felt very natural to me. I specialize in pencil drawings mostly portraits and natural subjects. I didn’t consciously “choose” art, it became the one thing that helped me express myself and clear my mind. Whenever I draw, it helps me release stress and stay grounded. Over time, I’ve continued to develop my skills, guided by talented artists around me and my own desire to improve.
What inspires you as an artist? Are there specific themes or subjects that you find yourself drawn to?:
I am mostly inspired by human expressions, emotions, and everyday life. Portraits attract me because they allow me to capture depth and tell silent stories through the eyes and facial details. I’m also drawn to natural things calm scenes, textures, and objects that feel simple but meaningful. I enjoy creating art that feels real and relatable.
What do you hope to communicate or evoke through your art? Is there a specific message or emotion that you strive to convey to your audience?
Through my art, I aim to evoke calmness, connection, and emotion. I want people to feel something when they look at my work whether it’s peace, curiosity, or familiarity. I try to show that even simple, everyday subjects can carry beauty. My portraits especially aim to communicate human emotion and tell a story without words.
Are there any particular artists or art movements that have influenced your work? How have they shaped your artistic perspective?
Yes. I’ve been strongly influenced by two artists in particular Etuk Unyime and Idy Harrison. Watching their works and following their creative process has shaped the way I think about pencil art, realism, and discipline. Their attention to detail, patience, and ability to bring life into their drawings inspires me to push myself, improve my technique, and stay consistent. They’ve played an important role in how I approach my own artistic journey.
How do you handle criticism or feedback on your artwork? How do you use it to grow and improve as an artist?
I try to see criticism as a tool rather than an attack. Even when feedback feels uncomfortable, I remind myself that it can show me things I may not have noticed in my work. I usually take a moment to reflect on the comment, pick out what is useful, and then apply it to my next piece. Listening to other artists and viewers has helped me improve my shading, proportions, and overall technique. In the long run, constructive criticism pushes me to grow and strengthen my skills.
Are there any specific goals or aspirations you have for your artistic career? How do you plan to pursue them?
Yes. One of my main goals is to develop my pencil art to a professional level where I can confidently take commissions, exhibit my work, and eventually teach or mentor other artists. I want to build a strong portfolio, gain more exposure through competitions like this, and keep learning new techniques from experienced artists around me. I’m also working on being more consistent, practicing regularly and experimenting with new styles to push my creativity forward.
